Are You Aware of These New CA Driving Laws?

Are You Aware of These New CA Driving Laws?

All Californians know that the state has some pretty strict driving laws. What many may not be aware of is the fact that some new driving laws just went into effect July 1st. These new laws seek to keep up with the ever changing modern world and help keep everyone on the road safe. That is something that everybody wants, because even though the law may not directly affect you, it can affect the other drivers around you, which can be beneficial.

First, there is SB 20, which is a law that applies to buses. This law basically states that anyone riding on a bus that has seat belts has to use the seatbelts. It is no longer optional. Furthermore, anyone between the ages of 8 and 16 must wear a seatbelt while riding on a bus. Anyone who breaks this law will face a fine. While this may be a bit bothersome to regular bus riders, it is a better alternative than getting flung around within the vehicle in an accident.

Next is AB 2657, which is directed at the drivers of vehicles transporting paying passengers. This includes Lyft and Uber drivers. This laws makes it illegal for a driver of a for hire vehicle to drive with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .04%, which is higher than the normal average for normal drivers, who are allowed a BAC of .08%. Punishment for breaking this law will result in a suspension of the person’s driver’s license, and a disqualification of the person’s ability to get a commercial driver’s license.

Both of these new driving laws are aimed at keeping people safe, whether they are the passengers on a bus, or within an Uber or Lyft. Furthermore, by reducing the permitted BAC of vehicle for hire drivers, these laws should help keep the roads that much safer.

Prevent Bullies

Prevent Bullies

New year, same problem. It’s the start of a new school year, which means new classrooms and new friends. For some, it also means facing new bullies. Let’s join the nation and take a stand against bullying one child at a time. What better child to start with than your own? The new school year is the perfect opportunity to start, or continue, the conversation with your kids about the importance of being kind to everyone and avoid being a bully.

A bully isn’t just someone who beats up on another student. According to the CDC, “Bullying is any unwanted aggressive behavior(s) by another youth or group of youths that involves an observed or perceived power imbalance and is repeated multiple times or is highly likely to be repeated. Bullying may inflict harm or distress on the targeted youth including physical, psychological, social, or educational harm.”

It is important to talk to your children about the different types of bullying. They are physical, verbal, and relational. Physical bullying is when one hits, kicks, punches, spits on, or trips another person. Verbal bullying is when someone taunts, calls another person a name, threatens, or makes sexual comments to someone else. The final type is relational, meaning someone is trying to harm another’s personal relationship by isolating them, spreading rumors, or sharing images.

According to stopbullying.gov, children are most likely to be bullied throughout elementary school. One of the key ways you can help prevent bullying is to address the bullying whenever and wherever you see it taking place. It is also important to talk to your children about the importance of being inclusive and kind to everyone, despite differences you may have.

Amber Alerts

Amber Alerts

If you own a cell phone then it’s likely that you’ve heard the buzzer-like noise that blasts from the speakers at any given time of the day. Depending on the time of day or what you are in the middle of, you may or may not be slightly irritated at the unannounced noise. However, this noise, part of the National AMBER Alert Program, could be a signal of life or death for an abducted child.

According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response Plan, also known as the AMBER Alert program, is a partnership between law enforcement agencies, broadcast agencies, and transportation agencies to activate an urgent notification for serious child-abduction situations.

The blaring noise that comes over your cell phone is part of the Emergency Alert System that broadcasts a description of the abducted child, who the suspected abductor is, and the vehicle used for the abduction. This is done in an effort to immediately notify the public or assist in the successful recovery of the child.

You receive these notifications on your phone as part of Wireless Emergency Alert program. You automatically receive these notifications on your cell phone when you are in the geographic location that the alert has been issued. Luckily, the alerts are sent through a special wireless carrier so you are not charged the receipt of these notifications.

After you are startled by one of these notifications, it can be very tempting to turn them off – don’t. AMBER Alerts are effective. Of the 179 AMBER Alerts issued in 2016, 155 of the children were recovered and 43 of those recoveries were a direct result of the AMBER Alert being issued. That’s 43 children that were reunited with their families and will be able to grow up.

These alerts aren’t very common, California only issued 10 alerts in 2016. However, as we said before, these alerts could be the difference between life and death. If you’ve turned off these alerts on your phone, we suggest turning them back on. You could be the difference in saving a child’s life.

Reckless Driving in Los Angeles and California

Reckless Driving in Los Angeles and California

Recently, a video surfaced of a group of cars taking over an intersection in South Los Angeles late one night. The video shows at least three separate vehicles doing doughnuts through the intersection at the same time. Meanwhile, spectators look on from the sidewalks, some dangerously close to the vehicles.

To some people, this may look like fun, but most others see that this is a very dangerous. Not only did this block traffic in the intersection, but it put many people in danger. While it is unclear if any arrests were made in relation to this incident, it is likely that if any of the drivers were caught, they would have been charged with reckless driving.

California Vehicle Code 23103 makes it a crime for any person to drive their vehicle in a reckless fashion with complete disregard to the safety of any nearby people or property. This is exactly what the people in the video were doing. They were driving in a reckless fashion with complete disregard for any of the bystanders, some of which came with inches of the fast moving vehicles.

The penalties for reckless driving in California include a fine and possible jail time. The severity of these consequences is dependent on whether the crime is charged as a misdemeanor or as a felony. In most cases, reckless driving is a misdemeanor offense that comes with 5 to 90 days in a county jail and/or a fine of no more than $1,000. However, if a person is injured as a result of the reckless driving, the person will likely face felony charges. These charges are much steeper and can include up to a 3 year stay in jail, and/or a max fine of $10,000. Regardless of how it is charged, reckless driving also adds 2 points to a driver’s license.

Driving a vehicle erratically can be very dangerous for both the driver and pedestrians. The video in questions shows multiple instances where a driver almost hit a pedestrian which would have carried serious consequences.

Exercising Really Is Good for You

Exercising Really Is Good for You

If you were to ask someone for a way to stay healthy, there’s a good chance he or she would tell you to exercise. Many people believe that having a more active lifestyle is the key to staying healthy, both physically and mentally. As it turns out, these people are right. A recent study has proven this fact, at least somewhat.

Several studies have established the fact that getting some exercise in each week can increase a person’s overall mood and physical health. Exercising has been shown to alleviate, and even prevent depression. A new study that was just published in Lancet Psychiatry says that just two hours of physical activity a week is all it takes to see these kinds of results.

This new discovery makes the thought of exercising a lot easier for many people. In fact, that’s just 24 minutes a day, 5 days a week. That is much more manageable for people with very busy schedules.

Of course, as with any good thing, there is a point where it becomes too much. The study found that there is a limit to the positive gains that a person can receive from exercising. The sweet spot seems to be anywhere between 2 to 6 hours a week. The theory is that people who excessively or obsessively exercise may be suffering from mental health problems, which is why they exercise so much.

Regardless, it is safe to say that exercising is good for you. Not only does it help keep your body in shape, it can help your mind out as well. If you don’t have loads of time to devote to exercising, do not worry. If you can squeeze in around 25 minutes of any physical activity, every weekday, you will be well on you way to living a happier, healthier lifestyle.

What Is the Best Meal of the Day?

What Is the Best Meal of the Day?

As summer comes to a close, kids are bracing for their inevitable return to school. Their days of sleeping in and relaxing will be over. In their place will be stress-filled, drowsy mornings that lead to long lectures. In the chaos of getting ready in the morning, it can be easy to forget out what is arguably the most important meal of the day.

Everyone has heard that breakfast is the most important meal, and many studies have proven that this is true. Breakfast is the first meal a person has after roughly 8 hours of fasting. In order for your body to wake up and be able to focus on anything, it needs energy. Breakfast helps refill your energy and gives you a jumpstart for the rest of the day.

Eating breakfast in the morning, which should occur sometime within the first two hours after waking up, has many benefits. It can improve memory and concentration, which is very important for kids who are heading off to a day of learning. Eating breakfast can also make us happier, so you aren’t feeling hangry, and can reduce stress. All of this can combine to mean better grades for students.

Growing children need a lot of energy to stay active, and they can get a lot of that required energy from having breakfast. It is estimated that boys between the ages of 7 and 10 should consume roughly 1970 kcals per day. Girls within the same age range should consume about 1740 kcals per day.

As hard as it can be to fit in in the early hours before school, it is important to always make time for breakfast. Doing so can put everyone in a better mood and help your kids be more attentive and prepared for the school day. If you want what is best your kids, then you should consider providing them with a good breakfast every morning.

Know Your Rights

Know Your Rights

Inmates are people too. Regardless of the crime committed or the time left to serve on their sentence, inmates are human beings that deserve to be treated as such. Across the nation, inmates are granted basic human rights that are protected by the U.S. Constitution. Whether you are facing prosecution or you have a family member behind bars, it is important to know your rights.

These are rights protected by the U.S. Constitution that you should be aware of.

The right to humane facilities and conditions – While awaiting trial, an inmate must be housed in proper facilities and cannot be treated as guilty.
The right to be free from sexual crimes – A prisoner cannot become the victim of sexual crimes or sexual harassment. This is protected by the Prison Rape Elimination Act. This act was established to “provide for the analysis of the incidence and effects of prison rape in Federal, State, and local institutions and to provide information, resources, recommendations and funding to protect individuals from prison rape.” (Prison Rape Elimination Act, 2003). The act was also responsible for developing standards for the elimination of prison rape.
The right to be free from racial segregation – There shall be no racial segregation in prisons.
The right to express condition complaints – An inmate has the right to express their concerns about the conditions of the prison to the courts.
The right to assert their rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act – Any inmate that has a disability is entitled to their rights as outlined in the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The right to medical care and attention as needed – An inmate is entitled to medical care for long-term and short-term ailments.
The right to appropriate mental health care – An inmate is entitled to mental health care.
The right to a hearing if they are to be moved to a mental health facility – If an inmate is to be moved to a mental health facility, they are entitled to a hearing.

Recent Breakout in Germany

Recent Breakout in Germany

People have a way of making things happen when they really want them to. This is especially true for people who feel trapped when they really want to be somewhere else. Recently, some police officers in Germany had to deal with two men who broke out of their confinement in the hopes of having fun.

This story is not quite what you would think. The two men were not incarcerated individuals who broke out of jail. No, these two escape artists actually ran away from their retirement home. The elderly gentlemen had decided they wanted to go to a heavy metal music festival and they were not going to let anyone or anything stand in their way.

The men escaped from their retirement home in Dithmarschen in northern Germany and were headed for the Wacken Open Air Festival. Wacken is a three day long, annual festival that sells around 75,000 tickets every single year. Police found the two men around 3 in the morning headed to the festival. They then escorted the pair’s taxi back to the retirement home to ensure they actually went back home. It is unknown whether or not the men had tickets to the festival.

People are always looking for ways to do what they really want to do, and this is the perfect example of this. These men were determined to not let their age, or the retirement home prevent them from having a good time. The same can be said for a person who is just arrested.

No one wants to be arrested, but before anyone tries breaking out of jail, consider getting out in a more legal method. You can post bail with Bail Bonds in Terra Bella. We will guide you through the bail process and make it a quick and affordable experience for you.

Who Hasn’t Bounced Through a Castle?

Who Hasn’t Bounced Through a Castle?

As a kid, we all knew that the best parties had bouncy castles. These colorful, inflatable castles were the center point of many fun parties. They allow kids to run and jump around without much fear of colliding with something hard or sharp. They are a great way for parents to wear their kids out as well.

While many of us have great memories of these air filled palaces, there are some out there who view these contraptions as dangerous. Of course, bounce castles aren’t completely safe. If the kids inside get too wild, it is only a matter of time before some collide and hurt themselves. However, that is not the worst case scenario.

There have been instances where bouncy castles were picked up by strong gusts of wind. The castle then fly away with children still inside. Nobody wants to see this, and it is a nightmare situation for any parent. All a parent can do is the castle and their child come down safely, which doesn’t always happen.

If bouncy castles are not properly maintained or setup in the correct manner, problems can occur. Recently, a bouncy castle in Gorleston, England recently exploded with kids inside. Sadly, one child did die from the incident. What’s worse, is this is not the first time something like this has happened in England or here in the US. This has since caused some of England’s political leaders to begin to call for a ban on bouncy castles in the country until their safety can be better guaranteed.

With summer here, and kids out of school for the season, it is likely that there will be more people inflating bouncy castles to celebrate. Do you think they are safe, or should the US or California think about enacting stricter safety regulations for these inflatable palaces like our friends over in England? Let us know in the comments down below.

Calexit May Be Making a Comeback

Calexit May Be Making a Comeback

Some voters will likely remember the recent plan to separate the state of California from the rest of the nation. This plan was referred to as Calexit. The plan was to have California secede from the Union to form its own, brand new country. The plan itself was very big, and received a lot of support and criticism from all sides.

The people behind the plan have until October 17 to gather enough signatures for the proposal to be placed on the 2021 ballot. However, as that deadline fast approaches, the groups seems to be largely abandoning that effort in favor of a new one. This is largely due to the fact that they have yet to acquire even 25% of the needed voter signatures to get the measure approved. The belief is that plans like Calexit have failed in the past before due to their lack of consideration of Native Americans.

The US Census state that California is home to the largest population of Native Americans in the country. This is part of the reason why the new plan for California secession involves dividing the new California in half and calling one half the Autonomous Native Nation.

This new plan is still in the early stages of development. The Yes California group, the one backing the Calexit plan, has not yet contacted tribal leaders to get their opinions. Currently, the plan has California been split roughly down the middle with the western half being the new California and the Eastern half becoming the Autonomous Native Nation.

What do you think of this latest plan to change the shape and future of California? Would you rather have the state split into three with Cal-3, or would you rather secede altogether? Perhaps you’d prefer it if the state stayed exactly the same. Let us know in the comments.
