Tips to Avoid Sparking Wildfires in California’s Winds

Tips to Avoid Sparking Wildfires in California’s Winds

Once again, Californians are facing down massively destructive wildfires. These latest fires are a reminder that our state’s wildfire season extends well into fall thanks to the harsh winds that usually roll around this time of year. These winds can take what would have been a controlled blaze and cause them to burn out of control at an alarming rate. This is when it is important for everyone to remember to be careful about starting fires. Nobody wants to be responsible for the next big blaze.

In order to avoid starting a wildfire, a person needs to watch what they are doing. If they are not careful, their current task could spark something big. Campfires are an obvious example. If they are not set up in safe areas away from vegetation, then they can quickly burn out of control. They also need to be fully doused to ensure that no warm embers remain to reignite the fire. Also, never have a campfire when there are high amounts of winds as they can send embers into nearby vegetation. These rules also apply to anyone thinking about burning yard waste.

Fireworks are another obvious cause of wildfires, which is why the more exciting ones are banned in the state unless handled by a licensed professional. Fireworks should never be used in windy situations, or near vegetation.

Smokers need to be aware of how they dispose of their cigarettes, as they are another source of fire hazard. They need to be disposed of in a way that ensure that they either are completely put out, or that they cannot blow into any kindling. They should never be dropped on the ground or tossed out of a car window.

Lastly, people need to be careful when suing vehicles near dry vegetation. A person should never park their vehicle on top of dry vegetation since the heat from the exhaust pipe is enough to cause plants to ignite. This is the case for cars, trucks, and off-road vehicles like motorcycles.

By following these tips, and using a bit of common sense, a person can greatly reduce the chance that their actions might spark a wildfire.

Who Will Pay for the Camp Fire Damages?

Who Will Pay for the Camp Fire Damages?

The Camp Fire is currently blazing across Northern California. The fire quickly became the deadliest in state history with a death toll of 56 as of writing this article. However, with over 200 people still missing, that number is likely to rise. Sadly, that is just the human aspect of the fire, the financial aspect is just as bad.

In its current state, the Camp Fire is estimated to have done roughly $15 billion in damages so far. While the official cause of the fire has yet to be determined, there is a chance that Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) may be found responsible. This is due to the fact that PG&E reported an outage and damage to a transmission tower near the area where the fire started, shortly before the blaze ignited. Last fall, it was determined that PG&E’s equipment had caused 17 of the 21 major fires Northern California experienced that season.

Earlier this year, California lawmakers tried to intervene and help PG&E out by passing Senate Bill 901. This law allowed utility companies to pass any expenses occurred due to fires to be passed on to ratepayers. Basically, if the company needed to pay off damages cause by a fire, they could use that as a reason to raise customer rates. However, this law only applies to any fires started in 2019, and to a select few from 2017.

If PG&E is found responsible for starting the Camp Fire, they could face serious trouble. The company is still working on paying off damages to 2017 fires and is not likely to be able to recover from this. If they do, then ratepayers may end up paying for the fire with higher rates, which is something that many people cannot afford.

How Secure Are Your Electronics?

How Secure Are Your Electronics?

In today’s modern world, everyone has at least one internet capable device. Typically though, people have more than one device like this. They have laptops, desktops, tablets and smartphones. All of these devices are constantly connected to the internet to ensure that their user can access whatever they need whenever they want. There is all kind of information out there that can be accessed with the tap of a finger.

Unfortunately, if a person is not careful, that connection can work both ways. Hackers fill the internet with malicious websites and files in an ongoing effort to access other people’s private information. If someone is not careful, they can unknowingly provide a random person with access to every private bit of information stored on their device.

Keeping their device safe and secure is in everyone’s best interest. After all, a person doesn’t want to let a hacker into their bank account, or provide one with enough personal information that they can steal the victim’s identity online.

Keeping Devices Safe

One of the most important steps that a person can take to keeping their device secure, is simply having anti-virus and anti-spyware software along with a firewall installed on it. Anti-virus and anti-spyware software protect devices from malicious files that could potentially end up on them. They monitor and scan files that are downloaded onto the device. They also scan the device itself to make sure that no known viruses are already installed.

Firewalls, which are named after the metal walls that would prevent fires from spreading in buildings or vehicles, monitor network traffic on a device. They contain data “fires” by preventing information from spreading without control. They see what programs are sending information and, and what information is being sent back to the device. If information is coming from an unsecure or untrustworthy site, then the firewall blocks the communication. The same happens when an unknown program within the device tries to send information out. The firewalls blocks this communication and alerts the user. The user can then determine whether or not the communication is safe.

These kinds of things should be installed and used on all devices that connect to the internet in order to ensure that they remain safe and secure. However, simply having them installed is not enough. Hackers are always updating their schemes, meaning that the software designed to stop them needs to be constantly updated as well. A person needs to make sure that they regularly update the software that keeps their computer safe so that it can continue to effectively do its job.

Being Safe Online

Once a person is sure that their device is “locked up” safe and tight with anti-virus software and a firewall, they then need to learn how to be safe while online. By learning to avoid certain situations and scenarios, they can reduce the chances of ever needing to use the protection software.

For starters, a person should be wary of where they connect to the internet. Yes, public Wi-Fi may be nice because everyone can connect to it, but that is exactly what makes it dangerous. Anyone can connect to public Wi-Fi sources, including hackers. When devices are on the same network, they can easily share data between them. Hackers can exploit this when connected to public hotspots. This is why a person should only connect to trusted Wi-Fi networks.

Another thing to keep an eye out for are scam emails. It is never a good idea to click on a link or download a file from email that was sent by a stranger. The link could take the person to a malicious website that could try to infect the person’s computer with a virus or trick them into handing over personal information. The file in the email could contain a virus, and by opening it, the person allows it to infect their computer. Even emails sent from “friends” can be dangerous. Often times, hackers will set up their email to display the name of someone in the recipient’s contact list, making it seem as though it came from a friend. That is why it is best to never open links in emails.

Consequences of Hacking

Computer crimes, such as hacking, in California are defined under California Penal Code 502. Computer crimes are defined as any unlawful accessing, changing, or damaging of a computer, a computer’s system, or a computer network. This includes smart devices such as smart phones and tablets.

Committing any kind of computer crime can result in severe fines and imprisonment. Fines can range anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000. The imprisonment can be served in either a county jail or state prison. The sentence can be anywhere from one year, 16 months, two years, or three years. The severity of the punishment depends on the severity of the crime committed.

Unfortunately, these consequences don’t prevent everyone from hacking into computers that aren’t theirs.

Keeping an Electronic Device Safe Is Easier than You Think

People are sometimes surprised by everything they have to do to ensure their electronic device’s safety. However, after a person has installed protective software and learned the tricks to keeping their devices safe, things get easier. It will become second nature to spot malicious sites, files and emails.

By following the tips mentioned above, a person can ensure their devices safety. By doing so, they keep all personal files safe and out of harm’s way of most hackers. This means less chances of someone stealing their identity or accessing their bank account.

Cell Phone Use While Driving Is Dangerous

Cell Phone Use While Driving Is Dangerous

Even with all of the PSA’s out there, there are still some drivers who think it is okay to talk on their cell phone while driving. It is still a common enough practice that you can see at least once a day. However, driving while talking on a cell phone without a hands-free device is illegal in California. If a driver is caught breaking the law, they will face consequences.

Driving while using a cell phone can be very distracting, which can cause a driver to not notice important events going on around them. This leads to an increased chance of their being an accident, which is why the practice was outlawed. It is estimated that roughly 28% of all car accidents in the US are caused by cell phone use behind the wheel. This equate to about 1.6 million car accidents every year.

Using a cell phone while driving without a hands-free device is an infraction level offense in the state of California. A first time offense can earn a person a base fine of $20, which after assessments, will likely total more than $150. Any subsequent offenses will start at $50 and will likely total around $250. Is any phone call really worth that much money?

In addition to the ticket and fines, a person will also receive points on their driver’s record. If they acquire too many points in too short of time, they can have their driver’s license suspended. Then they will need to find another way to get to wherever they are headed.

Driving will distracted by anything is dangerous. A driver needs to keep their focus on the road in front of them. If they don’t, then they could very easily wind up in a car accident. That is something that nobody wants, so it is best to let the call or text wait until reaching the intended destination to reply.

Could Flying Motorcycles Be the Future of Law Enforcement?

Could Flying Motorcycles Be the Future of Law Enforcement?

Here in the US, we like to make sure that our law enforcement officers have the latest and greatest tech at their disposal. This, along with their training, helps ensure that they can do their jobs to the best of their ability. However, even for us, there are some bits of technology that are too advanced to be used in the field just yet. However, that is not the same for police officers elsewhere in the world.

Police officers in Dubai are getting to test out and train on some brand new tech that would make just about anyone jealous. The Dubai police force is already known for having a fleet of super cars including a few Bugatti, Ferrari, and Lamborghini. Now, the police force is training officers on flying motorcycles.

The plan is to have these officers and vehicles in service by 2020. A California company, Hoversurf, created the electrical vertical take-off vehicles and has a deal with the Dubai police force to provide them with a few of their vehicles. If the police force likes the vehicles, then they will be able to request some more.

Currently, this tech is very new, and therefore limited. The bike’s battery takes 2 and a half hours to fully charge and can stay airborne for 10-25 minutes when controlled by and carrying a pilot. When flying in drone mode, it can fly for around 40 minutes. Both the Dubai police force and Hoversurf are looking into ways to improve the vehicle, giving it more flight time.

This could be the first step in new technology. If it goes well, we could soon see these kinds of vehicles here in the states as well. Just imagine getting pulled over by a hover bike.
